The Underwater World of Northumberland and Berwickshire - a guide

A booklet has been produced to celebrate the amazing wealth of marine life which lies beneath the waves along the Berwickshire and North Northumberland coast.

This spectacular coastline is well known for its dramatic scenery and abundant wildlife. What is less well known is that this magnificent scenery continues offshore and is home to a dazzling array of colourful marine life. The North Sea often appears to be forbidding, steely grey and stormy, however there is a wealth of hidden natural treasures beneath the waves. The shallow sea along the Berwickshire and north Northumberland coast is the location of a remarkable rocky reef which forms a magical seascape teaming with fascinating marine creatures.

One of the reasons this site is so special is due to the incredible mixture of plants and animals that are found here. Warm loving species such as the Devonshire cup coral (which is usually found on the south and west coasts of Britain) can be found along side cold loving northern species, such as the wolf fish and deeplet anemone (which usually prefer in cold Arctic waters).

The guide entitled 'The Underwater World of Northumberland and Berwickshire' has been is part of the series published by the AONB partnership in association with the Berwickshire and North Northumberland Coast European Marine Site, which so far has published guides to bird watching and to exploring the shore in Northumberland and Berwickshire. The booklet will be available from libraries and tourist information centres from December, or by contacting the European marine site officer on 01670 534095 or emailing ALannin@northumberland.gov.uk.

Explore the shore with our new guide to the Berwickshire and Northumberland Coast

A new guide to exploring the beaches of the Berwickshire and North Northumberland coast has been produced and launched in summer 2004. The guide has been designed to highlight the superb variety of marine life found on the shores of our area.

The guide breaks the coast down into sections, providing maps, information on where to find interesting marine life, the type of shore and guidance on access, safety, transport and local services. There are plenty of colourful pictures showing amazing seashore life and glimpses of the marine world offshore.

The guide is available this summer for £3.00 in tourist information centres, libraries and bookshops throughout Northumberland and East Berwickshire and neighbouring areas. Copies can also be ordered from Northumberland County Council. If you would like to order a copy, please contact the EMS officer on 01670 534095 or email ALannin@northumberland.gov.uk.
