The
St. Abbs & Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve (VMR), which
originated in the late seventies, is one of the most popular
dive sites in Britain. Local divers, concerned about the potential
threats to the marine environment, introduced a voluntary
ban on the collection of shellfish by divers. This action
highlighted the need for a more formal marine conservation
initiative in the area. A Management Committee made up of
representatives from community councils, harbour trusts, diving
associations and conservation organisations was established.
The VMR was officially opened by David Bellamy in August 1984.
The aims
of the VMR are:
"To
conserve the biodiversity of the coastal waters and to raise
awareness of the marine environment through education and
promote responsible recreational use alongside a sustainable
fishery to the mutual benefit of all".
The VMR
covers 8 km of the Berwickshire coast from Pettico Wick in
the north to Eyemouth Bay in the south and includes breathtaking
underwater reefs and sea caves teeming with marine life. The
good water quality and spectacular underwater scenery entice
thousands of divers every year, but the non-diver can also
enjoy the Reserve. There is a coastal walk from Eyemouth to
St. Abb's Head National Nature Reserve and at low tide you
can venture onto the lower shore to discover an amazing variety
of marine life.
A Ranger
is employed by the VMR committee, to liaise with visiting
divers, develop an educational programme, carry out monitoring
projects and promote marine conservation. Come and join the
Ranger on a "Rockpool Ramble" during the summer
months. Times and dates are advertised in the local area or
telephone 018907 71443
The VMR lies at the northern extreme of the Berwickshire and
North Northumberland Coast European marine site. There are
important links between these two initiatives, which require
an integrated approach to management. The VMR is a key focal
point for translating the aims and objectives of the European
marine site. Equally, the European marine site provides a
network through which the successful management principles
adopted by the VMR can be extended to a wider area.
