Welcome
to the Berwickshire & North Northumberland Coast European
marine site.
The site encompasses 115km of some of the most stunning coastline
in the UK. The site stretches from Alnmouth in North East
England to Fast Castle Head in south east Scotland, including
the Farne Islands, covering nearly 650 square kilometres of
shore and sea.
The
Berwickshire and North Northumberland coast supports a great
diversity of habitats, plants and animals. On the shore we
can see grey seals, internationally important species of migratory
birds and a vast array of smaller animals such as anemones,
sponges and crabs in amongst the rocks and tide pools. Below
the sea surface, kelp forests, sea caves, and rocky reefs
are found, all supporting a wealth of marine life.
This
website will help you to find out more about the marine habitats,
plants and animals for which the European marine site has
been proposed. There is also information about how the site
is managed, and the people and organisations involved.
Management Scheme Consultation 2009
Great strides have been made in implementing the EMS Management scheme published in 2001. This and new legislation indicated it was time for a new management plan. In recognition of the great joint work that has been carried out by the EMS officer and the North Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team the new management plan is an integrated plan that aims to manage land and sea together. This new draft plan is out for consultation between January 9th and March 6th 2009. It is accompanied by a Strategic Environmental Assessment. We welcome all responses and comments on this draft and would be delighted to hear from any interested parties via the online response form or by printing and posting the form. We expect to publish the finalised plan in July 2009.
